Trishan Patel Coaching delivers football-based mentoring and personal development programmes designed to support young people’s confidence and behaviour, as well as their social and emotional development. We use football as an engagement tool to support young people to develop belief in themselves both on and off the pitch.
We work closely with schools, inclusion teams and community organisations to support students who may struggle with their emotional regulation and self-esteem. Often, our students are those who find it challenging to engage with traditional classroom-based interventions.
Mentoring is delivered by our coaches through guided reflection and impactful conversations in a format that is accessible for and of use to young people, all alongside traditional football coaching. The sessions create a safe environment that meets their interests and allows them to feel valued and motivated.
Working alongside AllChild has been an important way for us to extend our reach. We share a common belief that every young person deserves access to opportunities, trusted relationships and support that understands their strengths and needs.
Our partnership has meant we’ve been able to connect with more schools and communities that are committed to improving outcomes for children and young people through prevention and inclusive support. With AllChild, we can create environments where young people feel supported academically, personally and emotionally.
To go from being disengaged and lacking self-belief to becoming confident young adults is hugely important and is a development that stays with our students for the rest of their lives. The teamwork aspect of football also helps to build trust and feelings of belonging, which have a considerable effect on their perspectives and attitudes.
The results in our students are clear. Over time, we begin to see young people communicate more openly and encourage others, developing stronger relationships with peers and staff in the process. We regularly see improvements in confidence and resilience, as well as increases in positive behaviour and overall wellbeing.
For many young people, having a trusted adult role model and a positive outlet through sport can have a lasting impact on how they see themselves both inside and outside of school.
Recently, during an eight-week football mentoring intervention with students identified for additional support, self-perception assessments demonstrated clear improvements in confidence and emotional development, as well as a marked improvement in social interaction. Teachers also reported noticeable changes in pupil attendance and engagement across the wider school environment.
Football has always been deeply personal to me. During some of the toughest moments in my life – especially after losing my Dad – football became my escape, and the one place where I could process emotions, feel free, and keep moving forward. The game gave me purpose, discipline and comfort when I needed it most.
That is why this programme means so much to me. While I love being able to coach the sport to the next generation, it’s also about using the game to create safe spaces, relationships, and opportunities for young people to build their self-belief. Every session allows me to bring my own experiences and passion into helping others, while also honouring my Dad through the positive impact we create in young people’s lives.
