Leap Confronting Conflict is a national youth charity that provides transformative conflict management training and support to young people struggling with conflict and the professionals working with them. Our purpose is to give young people aged 11-25 the skills to manage conflict in their lives, reduce violence in their communities and help lead our society.
Leap has worked with AllChild for over six years delivering conflict navigation training to young people in selected partner schools. With support from AllChild’s Link Worker, partner schools identify young people that are struggling with conflict to participate in a 10-week training course. Leap delivers interactive training sessions for these young people using creative techniques including role-play and drama games to promote understanding of conflict and alternative approaches to managing it. Our curriculum is rooted in principles of building emotional skills, empathy, a sense of resilience, strong intergroup relations, and inclusive belonging in young people, so that conflict and difference are managed constructively and drive positive social change.
This work has always been important, but in today’s increasingly divided and disconnected world, it is more crucial than ever. With growing numbers of young people in the UK impacted by violence, racism, and poor mental health, Leap is deeply committed to equipping young people with the skills and confidence to navigate conflict, build effective relationships and thrive in society.
Of the young people that attended Leap’s training at an AllChild partner school this year, 100% reported that the training had made them feel more confident to share how they feel with others, and 100% reported that as a result of the training, they have a better understanding of how they respond when they are in conflict.
When asked what they enjoyed most about the course, one participant said:
“Communicating my feelings, communicating with new people about how I feel in certain situations. Helping see different perspectives of new situations.”
As we draw closer to our 40th year anniversary, we are more committed than ever to ensure that all young people have access to conflict navigation skills. Part of this approach will see an increase in its Leaps digital offer, enabling young people across the UK to access Leap’s training. Upcoming events include celebrating Conflict Awareness Week from 14 -20th October, with a focus on ‘Race and Conflict’. You can find out more and register for the following live online events here:
